Call for Contributions: “Palestine from Algeria and Algeria from Palestine: Anthropological Approaches”

Throughout their long historical struggles against colonial projects that attacked the region in the footsteps of western modernity, the Algerian and Palestinian peoples share rich experiences of liberatory and resistance endeavors. Anthropologists and ethnographers are sensitive to learn about the historical and mundane experiences of people in their daily cultural conditions, and provide deeper understanding of their traditional heritage and daily life within their specific societies during changing times. Antropologia, the Arab Journal for Contemporary Anthropological Studies, is pleased to invite you to contribute in its Special Issue: Palestine from Algeria and Algeria from Palestine: Anthropological Approaches.

This special issue is the fruit of a joint effort and cooperation between Fa3iloon, the Algerian Center for research in anthropology and human and social sciences and Insaniyyat-Society of Palestinian Anthropologists. We invite interested scholars to submit articles addressing one or more of the following themes:

  1. Palestine and Algeria: A perspective on one body and its parts; experiences of steadfastness and resistance to the colonizer, the image of Palestine in the Algerian literature (and school curriculum), and the experiences of the Algerians who came to Palestine since the nineteenth century.

  2. Writings on women, masculinity, heritage and art as resistance.

  3. Questions of identity, the relationship to place and collective memory, and the political and economic transformations in Palestinian society, inside and outside Palestine.

  4. Living with destruction, loss, and hopes for restoration: ethnographies of refugees, families, and martyrdom; embodied experiences and anthropology as an academic and intellectual field.

We welcome contributions in one of the following languages: Arabic, English and French, under the condition that they have not previously been published, in whole or in part, on paper or electronically.
